The Basics

Trauma

Sometimes life brings unexpected events which overwhelm our ability to cope with or process what has happened.  Trauma can result from a one-time event or from repeated experiences, and it may cause ongoing symptoms such as the loss of a sense of safety in the world as well as flashbacks, behavioral issues, relationship issues, and problems with regulating mood.  Attempts to manage the trauma can cause additional problems such as alcohol abuse or anxiety disorders.  Fortunately, there are some ways to work through trauma, most notably EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing).  EMDR is supported by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association and the Department of Veterans Affairs.  I draw on some different approaches in working with trauma, but EMDR is one of my primary modalities.
